Your head and your heart

THE MAN WHO THINKS HE KNOWS SOMETHING DOES NOT YET KNOW AS HE OUGHT TO KNOW.

1 COR 8:2 NIV
There are a lot of know-it-alls in this world, and Christians are just as likely to fall into this category as anyone else; maybe even more! When we read Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth we get the impression that it had more that its fair share. So, what did the Apostle have to say about it? ‘…while knowledge makes us feel important, it is love that strengthens the church. ‘The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. But the man who loves God is known by God’ (1 Corinthians 8:1-3 NIV). That’s wisdom! One of the important lessons we can draw out of this is that growing up spiritually is not about knowing more stuff but showing more love. That doesn’t mean we switch off our brains and let our emotions run riot – it means developing the right relationship between our head and our heart. Solomon understood this to the extent that he wrote: ‘As he thinks in his heart, so is he’ (Proverbs 23:7 NKJ). How can you think something in your heart? Marcus Borg writes, ‘…heart suggests something deeper than the intellect and the world of ideas… this deeper level of the self is the place of transformation.’ Hopefully you’ve already realised that when the Bible talks about the heart it doesn’t mean the biological heart, it means the centre of who you are. People who don’t learn to think from the heart find themselves at the mercy of their circumstances; they react and every decision comes off the ‘top of their head’. Don’t let that be you. Ask God to touch your head and heart today.
