One of the biggest sources of conflict in relationships is money. That is because a boyfriend or girlfriend often has opposite ideas about how money ought to be used. Pay attention early in the relationship about how your boyfriend or girlfriend handles money, as this can become a major problem when you later get married. Consider the words ‘delayed gratification’. When one person is willing to delay purchasing something until they have saved the money, but the other one isn’t, think about how this might become an issue if you were married and had a shared bank account. This is especially important if one person takes out loans to make purchases and ends up with lots of debts. Those debts will become your debts if you are planning to get married. Nothing irritates a disciplined, thrifty person more than living with someone who wastes their income and their future earnings on things that aren’t truly needed. The Bible clearly teaches the virtues of hard work, living frugally, saving, building, and producing by the sweat of our brows. If you don’t learn these virtues the right way, there is a good chance you’ll learn them the hard way. So here is some good advice: stay out of debt as much as possible and avoid credit cards. Their misuse can trap you into debt that keeps getting bigger if you don’t pay it all off at the end of each month and only pay minimum payments. Credit cards should be labelled, ‘Danger! Handle with care!’ Jesus put it this way: ‘Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own’ (Luke 12:15 NLT).
