Know when to shut up!

THE LORD GOD HAS GIVEN ME HIS WORDS OF WISDOM SO THAT I MAY KNOW

ISAIAH 50:4 TLB
Wisdom is a funny old thing. It’s supposed to come with age but often doesn’t. It supposed to come with experience but it doesn’t always. The reason it comes with age is because you mature over time but that just means you begin to realise you’re not perfect and you don’t need to be old to know that! You get wisdom through experience because you learn from your mistakes but: a) you don’t always learn and b) you can easily learn from other people’s mistakes! Wisdom is about understanding who you are, what you’re good at, accepting other people; and knowing they’re not perfect and putting all that understanding into practice! Being wise isn’t like being The Oracle, an all-knowing spooky person who knows exactly what’s going on in one glance. Much of it is about knowing when to speak and when to simply keep your mouth shut. You’d be surprised how often the best thing is to simply stay quiet and wait for the right moment to speak! Here are two things to try when giving out wisdom: 1) You may have the best answer in the world to someone’s problem but if you take the ‘ram-it-down-their-throat’ approach you’ll only upset them! Good ideas are wasted when you use a ‘ram-it-down-their-throat’ approach. You’ve got to learn how to say the right thing, the right way. 2) You won’t be able to help a soul unless you love the person you’re speaking to. If you love them you’ll approach them in a sensitive way, in the right time and with a lot of understanding. Without love, no one will care what you think!
